National Beer Day is annually observed on April 7, but the enjoyment of beer predates even our modern calendar, according to a CNN report.

Archeologists from Stanford University unearthed what they think is an ancient brewery at the Mijiaya site in China’s Shaanxi province.

Their findings were published in the latest edition of PNAS. The team found two subterranean pits with beer-making equipment that included funnels, pots and amphorae holding the residue of what probably was 5,000-year-old beer.

Stemming from that original Chinese recipe, beer has evolved into various flavors and styles, and become one of the most widely consumed alcoholic beverages in the world.

April 7 was chosen because in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending Prohibition by signing a law that allowed people to brew and sell beer, in the United States, as long as it remained below 4.0 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

During the signing of this law, FDR famously said,”this is a good time to have a beer,”  according to news reports at the time.

Beer drinkers celebrated and were happy to be able to purchase beer again for the first time in thirteen years.

Commemorating the holiday, local businesses are offering a variety of specials and discounts for today. For instance, MJ’s Tap House Grill will be offering happy hour from 3-7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to closing. Also, the restaurant has scheduled to offer $1 off all beer, wine or ciders, and $4.00 beer flights, according to a MJ’s Tap House Grill spokesperson.

Another local establishment, The Blaq Square, plans to offer $2 off bombers, $1 off all other craft beers, $3 Murphy’s Irish Stout, and $2 House Beers, according to The Blaq Square spokesperson.
