“It’s a celebration of our years, paintings and work,” said Dody Rogers, co-chair of the Art Classic Committee. “Our event is a fundraiser for our scholarship program for promising high school art students. Secondly, it gives the artists in our club experience in competing in an art show.”

Professional judges Julie Snyder and Bill Anderson spent most of Friday evaluating artwork by more than 75 artists in a variety of categories, including oil, watercolor and acrylic painting, collage work and sculpting.

They used a point system to determine first, second and third place winners in each category, who were then honored with ribbons at an awards ceremony at the gala.

Additional awards included the city of Santa Clarita’s “Excellence in Art,” “People’s Choice,” “Best of Show,” the “Huff” award and service award.

“We reached out to all our past presidents,” Rogers said. “Many of them live far away and so couldn’t come, but we did get quite a few to come today. It’s a big, big job, and especially as the club grows, it’s an even more complex job.”

Scholarship winners for 2014, all of whom are graduating seniors from local schools, included Steven Zavala of Hart High School, Jessica Bergler of Saugus High School and Diane Cho of West Ranch High School.

Zavala was awarded $1,000 for first place, Bergler received $750 for second place and Cho was given $500 for third place.
