Two productions were filming in downtown Newhall on Monday, including a brand new USA cable network series starring Ryan Phillippe based on the 2007 film “Shooter,” as well as a made-for-TV feature film called “Once Upon A Date.”

Dozens of Paramount Pictures trucks, trailers and tents were lined up in the vacant lot at the corner of Lyons Avenue and Main Street for the production of “Shooter,” while law enforcement vehicles bearing the name “Seattle Police” were parked at German Autohaus on 9th Street.
“We’re utilizing the German Autohaus for an auto garage scene, and then we’re heading down the street to Persia Restaurant,” said Javi Robles, key assistant location manager for “Shooter.”
Mark Wahlberg, who starred as top Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger in the 2007 film, is one of the executive producers of the show, while Phillippe — star of films like “Cruel Intentions,” “Crash” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” — is stepping into the role for the series.
In the original film, Swagger is living in exile when he is coaxed back into action in an effort to prevent a plot to kill the president. He is instead framed for the attempt and goes on the run to find the real killer and the reason he was set up, according to IMDb.
“We are based here (in Santa Clarita) and we film a lot of our episodes in town,” Robles said, noting that the production is set to film at College of the Canyons, a private residence in Newhall and near the Hyatt Regency Valencia on Tuesday.
For those residents who were warned they may hear the sound of simulated gunfire during filming last month at College of the Canyons, Robles confirmed that the filming was for “Shooter.”
“That was us,” he said. “We had a couple of single shots go off.”
“Shooter” is scheduled to premiere on USA on July 19, according to Robles.

Also filming at the Canyon Theatre Guild in Newhall on Monday was the PixL TV feature film “Once Upon a Date,” which is expected to continue filming in the area for the next eight days.
“Once Upon a Date” is a romantic comedy centered around a struggling family-owned theatre at risk of being forced out of business by a real estate developer. The developer’s son undertakes the task of convincing the owner to sell, and ends up falling in love with the man’s daughter during the process.
“He finds a way in as he auditions for Prince Charming in a play, and falls in love with the daughter, who’s in the play as the forgetful princess,” said Joshua Persky, location manager. “It’s something you would take your kids to.”
Most of filming for the production will take place inside the Canyon Theatre Guild, with Monday’s filming primarily dedicated to exterior shots of the theatere, according to Persky.
“Today we’re getting a large chunk of our exterior work taken care of because a lot of the businesses on Main Street are closed (and) we’re not going to impact them,” he said, noting that PixL is a small production company that prides itself on being considerate of the communities it films in so they can be welcomed by residents rather than viewed as “a nuisance.”
PixL has its own channel on the Dish Network and YouTube, and the movie is expected to premiere sometime next summer.
“When I say ‘our YouTube channel’ you think of the handheld (productions),” Persky said. “When you see the type of production that we are here … they’re all high-quality movies. It’s a subscription basis, you can get a trial membership or subscribe to the channel. With ‘smart TVs’ and all of that these days, it’s just like watching Netflix.”
While the names of the actors starring in the film were not readily available Monday morning, Persky noted that one of the movie’s stars has appeared on the CW television show “Vampire Diaries.”
“Once Upon a Date” is expected to wrap up filming at the Canyon Theatre Guild on June 15.
