On April 6, at about 1 p.m., CHP officials received a report of a vehicle over the side of a steep embankment on US-101, south of Dora Creek in Northern Mendocino County, according to a statement.

Officials could not confirm the vehicle was the one the missing Valencia family was driving, but the Thottapilly family was last seen within 30 miles of the incident and the vehicle matches the description of the family’s SUV.

“Witnesses described the vehicle as a maroon Honda Pilot,” said Officer Calvin Robertson, a CHP spokesman. “Evidence at the scene leads us to believe that the vehicle matches that description.”

The Thottapilly family went missing on April 5 after being seen in their last known location in Mendocino County north of San Francisco, according to a post form their family.

The family includes the father, Sandeep, 42; the mother, Soumya; their son, Siddhant, 12 and their daughter, Saachi, 9.

“He was the backbone of our family,” said Sachin Thottapilly, Sandeep’s brother. “He did everything he can to make sure all of their needs were provided.”

The family was on a road trip from Portland and was expected to visit a family member’s home in San Jose, but they never arrived.

Upon the arrival of emergency personnel, the involved vehicle was completely submerged in the Eel River, according to CHP.

The California Highway Patrol, Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue, Piercy Volunteer Fire, and Leggett Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the scene to assist. However due to the strong river current, and the poor clarity of the river, divers could not locate the vehicle.

CHP and emergency personnel have continuously searched and monitored the river to locate the vehicle.
