Families reunite after the McGrath Elementary School campus was on lockdown due to reports of a person with a gun.
As of 7:23 p.m., after deputies searched the elementary school campus, nobody was found and the search has been called off, said Lt. Rob Hahnlein with the SCV Sheriff’s Station.
“(The) kids are safe, that’s the happy story,” said Paul Cordeiro, superintendent for the Newhall School District. “Schools are very security minded, I think, for obvious reasons. I think the tragedy of today reminds us of the need to be security conscious.”
The school was placed on lockdown after two students called the SCV Sheriff’s Station saying the thought they saw two men walk into the school, one of the men with a gun, said Sgt. Cohen with the SCV Sheriff’s Station.
“We went into lockdown mode and we have that routine down very well which the kids are in the classroom, the blinds are closed, they’re in a part of the classroom that’s safer and from there it’s all about communication,” said Cordeiro.
Deputies were clearing McGrath Elementary School room-by-room in their search for the possible armed suspect, said SCV Sheriff’s Station officials.
“The phone was ringing off the hook and we answered every call,” said Cordeiro, “and I have to credit the parents for how patient and trusting they were with what we were doing.”
The incident was reported at 5:33 p.m.
McGrath Elementary School is located at 21501 Deputy Jake Dr, Newhall, CA 91321.
