Bridge to Home plans to organize Soup For The Soul, a charity event in which attendees purchase plates or tables, in order to fundraise for the Santa Clarita homeless support agency.

“‘Soup for the Soul’ is one of our fundraisers that we hold before we open the winter shelter for the year,” said Maria Dulac, volunteer and development coordinator for Bridge to Home. “This event helps us prepare for all the clients and helps us raise the money that we need.”

The event, which is being held at the Savia Campus of Real Life Church, plans to feature a dinner of mostly soups, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, entertainment, plus a live and silent auction.

“This is going the fifth year that we’ve done this, and when it first started it was a small community thing where we sent out invites for people to come visit the shelter and we only raised a few thousand dollars,” said Dulac. “But in last two years, we’ve held it at Savia Campus of Real Life Church and it’s become a much larger event.”

Last year, the event brought in $43,000 for the Bridge to Home, and this year, they’re hoping to reach the $50,000 mark.

“Soup for the Soul is a great way to support Bridge to Home, Santa Clarita’s year-round homeless support agency,” said Margaret Edwards, president of the Board of Directors for Bridge to Home. “In addition to the Winter Shelter, Bridge to Home provides year-round support services including case management, housing navigation and regular medical Clinics.”

Dulac argued that the reason for supporting Bridge to Home is not only the right thing to do for disenfranchised members of the community, but also the right thing to do for yourself and neighbors.

Additionally, Bridge to Home officials have stated that they are looking to expand the shelter’s months of operation from being just over winter to now operating year round.

“This is something we wanted for a long time and the community, for the most part, is hopeful and been wanting the shelter to be year-round,” said Chris Najarro, director of programs for Bridge to Home. “I think this is moving in the right direction to answer the need of the Santa Clarita homeless — without these types of services, individuals are sleeping in the streets, in the wash, in their car.”

The City Council votes next Tuesday on an agenda item to expand the funding for Bridge to Home, allowing them to operate throughout the year. However, officials have stressed that ‘Soup For the Soul’ is still an important event in supporting the daily operations of the homeless support agency.

“This event is for those who are willing to do something for your fellow man by helping us provide others with shelter, food and care,” said Dulac. “We serve the homeless, which at times can become our neighbors or even us, who never know if we might need help one day.”

“Soup for the Soul” takes place on Saturday, October 7th, 2017, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Savia Campus of Real Life Church located at 23780 Newhall Avenue, Santa Clarita.
