“Could be credit card receipts, bank statements, could be anything,” said Steve Sturgeon of Confidential Data Destruction.

The federal law, the “Red Flag Rule,” states that any company of three people or greater technically has to have an internal policy to maintain how long you keep a document, who gets to see it, where it is stored and how to get rid of it, according to Sturgeon.

The purpose of the law is to  detect the warning signs — or red flags — of identity theft in day-to-day operations, states the Federal Trade Commission website.

“We’re usually the answer in terms of the (question), ‘How do you get rid of it?’” said Sturgeon. “But the rest of it technically is enforceable and the fines can go anywhere from $10-250,000.”

“Health Information Act (laws) are incredibly sensitive pieces of information now,” said Sturgeon. “Even what the size of the shred has to be when it is destroyed, it’s not something that goes through your typical … shredder.”

To destroy unneeded, sensitive materials safely and securely and comply with federal privacy laws, Confidential Data Destruction offers services to assist Santa Clarita business owners. They even provide customers with a “Certificate of Destruction” with every invoice.

“We have a monthly service where we provide electronic waste or electronic media destruction. And we can destroy everything from a hard drive down to floppies and cell phones,” said Sturgeon of electronic waste disposal.

In regards to physical waste, there are even trucks that will come to a customer’s location to pick up waste to be taken back to the plant and shredded.

“What people don’t really understand is that that trash can you put in front of your house is public property,” explained Sturgeon. “Anyone can rifle through it, anyone can take information out of it.”
