The pre-holiday rush for SCV homeowners looking to update their kitchens in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas is starting now at Surfaces USA.

Out of nearly 100 brand new slabs of the latest local trends, more than one third of the one-of-a-kind materials are already gone, according to Jen Brown, interior designer and owner of Surfaces USA.

“Now people want classic, timeless whites … so we’ve brought in some very bold white pieces with beautiful veining and a lot of great movement– they’re like pieces of art,” she said. “Before they can pretty much load them off the truck, as cliche as that sounds, people are taking them and tagging them as we’re unloading.”

Brown is encouraging local homeowners who want to update their kitchen or bathroom countertops and backsplash in time for the holidays to help reduce both their pre-holiday stress and project turnaround time by getting started early.

“That’s really the best piece of advice I can give anybody: if you’re thinking about doing something for the holidays, do it now,” she said. “Be proactive, be prepared. We want you to have your house ready, we don’t want to add to the stress of the holidays. They’re stressful enough, especially if you’re hosting a dinner for 25 people.”

While the normal turnaround for kitchen updates is about 10 working days, that time usually increases to 14 working days by October, which doesn’t typically accommodate those homeowners who wait until the last minute.

“Believe it or not, we will get people that come in a week before Thanksgiving and say can we do this tomorrow,” Brown said. “It’s not going to happen overnight. It is a long process, it’s very labor-intensive.”

As for full kitchen remodels with custom or semi-custom cabinets, the turnaround jumps to six to eight weeks, meaning these pre-holiday projects need to be started immediately, Brown added.

“Come in, let us help you. We will educate you, we will walk you through the process, we’ll find the perfect fit for your lifestyle, your home, your colors,” she said. “But do it now.”
