“We’re seeing a lot of people (with) short sales, so we have those who are buying houses that may not be in the best condition,” said Jen Brown, interior designer and owner of Surfaces USA. “We try and accommodate and coordinate and get everything done before they actually move in.”
While electrical updates and the like usually have to be done through the builder, Brown continued, outdated or damaged countertops, floors and showers can be ripped out and replaced with new, modern surfaces by full service design centers like Surfaces USA.

“We can guide through the whole process and we can help pull things together that the average person who’s not in construction or doesn’t do remodels on a regular basis may not think of– whether it’s centering a mirror just because we want to alter a vanity by two or three inches … (or) if we want to rearrange where the toilet sits,” she said.
“Just things like this that we run into on a regular basis that it’s easier just to have us do it and help you with it. Some of the big box stores, you’re not going to get that same guidance.”
Common outdated surfaces Brown sees with short-sale homes include white tile in kitchens, tub and shower units in master bathrooms, garden tubs and molded, cultured marble in bathrooms.
“We have some tracks in Plum Canyon that have this extremely ornate molded, cultured marble one-piece master bathroom showers that nobody really knows what to do with, so we’re starting to rip some of those out,” Brown said.
For homeowners concerned about subcontractors entering their homes, Brown said Surfaces USA never subcontracts out to third parties and has their own contractor team that is licensed, bonded and insured.
