Cal ISO Says Conservation Paid Off

Southern California Flex Alerts have been discontinued

[view:node_ad=5]Amid temperatures well into the triple digits, California Independent System Operator Corporation, a not-for profit public benefit corporation that manages the flow of electricity for the state, reported last week that energy reserves for the state were low.

Last week’s low reserves then led to a level one emergency being declared, and Southern California residents were asked to conserve energy by setting their thermostats at 78 degrees, and avoiding the use of major appliances during peak energy hours.

Now, Cal ISO reports that the conservation effort worked. According to information released by Cal ISO, the massive effort worked to “shave the peak” of the energy usage. This helped to avoid a level two or level three emergency.

A level two emergency cuts off power for a limited amount of time to those who have volunteered that sacrifice  in exchange for lowered utility rates. A level three emergency could result in rolling blackouts.

Since the temperatures are cooling down and California’s energy reserve levels are back up, Cal ISO has discontinued their Flex Alerts.
