Castaic Sports Complex Renamed In Honor Of Fallen Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer

On Friday, members of the Los Angeles County community came together at the Castaic Sports Complex in remembrance of Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, who was tragically killed on duty nearly three years ago.

Deputy Ryan M. Clinkunbroomer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) was killed on September 16, 2023, in an ambush shooting at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Avenue Q in the city of Palmdale.

The accused shooter has yet to face trial due to a prolonged mental health evaluation process and is set to appear in March 2026.

A native of Castaic, Clinkunbroomer served the LASD for 8 years and was a fourth-generation member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, grandfather, father and mother. He had become engaged just days before his death.

Other memorials in Los Angeles County have been created in his honor, such as renaming a segment of Avenue Q after him.

Before the unveiling at the Castaic Sports Complex, speeches were given out, honoring Clinkunbroomer’s life and his lasting impact on the people near and dear to him.

Sheriff Robert Luna articulated the importance of naming the sports complex and its impact on kids who play there.

“It’s what was in his heart that made him an amazing Deputy Sheriff for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Somebody with courage, integrity and his value of community service, which the park is a great tribute to, because when kids think of Ryan, they’re going to say, ‘I want to be just like him,’” Luna said.

Norma Gonzalez with the County Department of Parks and Recreation referred to the newly renamed Ryan M. Clinkunbroomer Castaic Sports Complex as “The Clink,” after Ryan’s nickname in the department.

Los Angeles County Fifth District Supervisor Katherine Barger added that the name change also brings a scholarship opportunity for youth.

“This scholarship will fund youth programs right here at the complex, ensuring that Ryan’s legacy continues to uplift and empower the next generation of young boys and girls,” Barger explained.

Chad Clinkunbroomer, Ryan’s brother, lamented his sorrow and how much he misses him.

“To my brother, you are loved, you are missed, and now your name will live in a place filled with light, laughter and community. You will never be forgotten,” Chad said.

The last speaker was Michael Clinkunbroomer, Ryan’s father, and he gave accounts of Ryan’s life leading up to his death.

“Today’s renaming of the Castaic Sports Complex in honor of our son, brother, grandson, fiance and friend offers both a living and lasting Memorial, not just to Ryan or just to our family, but this entire community of Castaic,” Michael said. “This will be a physical reminder of Ryan’s love of community, his selflessness and his integrity.”

After the speeches, everyone gathered around and watched as the new Castaic Sports Complex sign was unveiled with the Clinkunbroomer name.
