Along with advising the faculty and staff of the school for what to do in an active shooter event, law enforcement officials educated Castaic parents on how to respond during a school crisis Friday.

“We were invited by the Castaic School District to expose their school staff, teachers and faculty in how to respond effectively to an active shooter incident,” said Sgt. Michael Harding of the Tactics and Survival Training Unit for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “As a parent of a couple girls that were this age, it would make me feel better if the teachers had a response plan or training on how to effectively deal with the event of an active shooter or some sort of attack.”
Since 2010, there have been 10 instances of school shootings in the United States. Among those, the most recent — North Park Elementary in San Bernardino — claimed the lives of Jonathan Martinez, 8, and Karen Smith, his teacher, according to CNN.
That number doesn’t include suicides, gang-related incidents or deaths resulting from interpersonal conflicts at schools nor shootings at colleges and universities.

“While this is not something that we wish to think about happening in our community,” officials said in a statement, “we believe it is in the best interest of our students, staff and families to be aptly prepared, for their safety and protection.”
“As a law enforcement officer, it feels good to know that the teachers have some training or response plan,” said Sgt. Harding. “Just that response plan will help law enforcement a lot in mitigating a threat.”
Not only were teachers and faculty instructed on how to protect their children in the event of a school shooting, but county training officers also sent word out to parents on how to best prepare and approach this type of situation.
“For parents of children of a certain age it would benefit them to talk about these instances,” said Sgt. Harding. “I know they’re violent acts and that we don’t want to expose our children to these things, but in today’s times we need to prep our children in order to increase their survivability during an active shooter event.”
“Parents also need to reach out to the school district to understand what their expectations are when it comes to their response,” said Sgt. Harding. “We don’t want parents flooding the school when bad things are occurring because during a law enforcement response, we don’t need other people getting in our way of mitigating the threat.”
