Refurbishment of Railroad Avenue is scheduled to start this June in Santa Clarita due to the annual Road Rehab program.

The Road Rehab program is expected to refurbish Railroad Avenue between Magic Mountain Parkway and 15th Street during the hours of 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. to reduce traffic impact and accelerate the work schedule.

Refurbishment of Railroad Avenue is set to be initiated under a Cold In-place Recycling Process (CIR), according to officials.

Throughout the process existing pavement is to be milled and crushed into an aggregate. New asphalt foam emulsion is added to the mixture before laying it back down and compacting it into refurbished asphalt.

After the following steps are completed, a rubberized asphalt top course is placed on top of the CIR pavement to produce a smooth surface for driving.

The CIR process is essential to Railroad Avenue’s refurbishment as the city can recycle 3.5 inches of asphalt and reduce the layer of rubberized asphalt cap from eight inches to two inches, according to officials. 

As well as eliminating the need to bring in over 23,000 tons of aggregate, and reducing the number of truck trips and road degradation impacts in the area, according to officials.

The process requires fewer construction days, resulting in a reduced impact on local traffic and fewer lane closures and is also expected to save time, money and energy, according to officials.

With the CIR process taking place at Railroad Avenue, greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption is to be reduced by approximately 70 percent and save $2 million on the project cost, according to officials. 

Road Rehab is set to include treatment and repairs for residential and arterial roads throughout the city over the next few months to improve roadways from the city, according to officials.
