Representative George Whitesides of California’s 27th District is thrilled to announce that the 2025 Congressional Art Competition is now open for submissions.
This prestigious annual event provides high school students from the Antelope Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, and San Fernando Valley with a unique opportunity to showcase their artistic talents on a national stage.
“I am excited to invite our district’s young artists to participate in this incredible competition,” said Congressman Whitesides. “The winning artwork will be displayed in the United States Capitol, and the winning student will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony.”
Competition Details and Guidelines
The Congressional Art Competition is open to high school students residing in District 27. Students are encouraged to create and submit original, two-dimensional artwork in any of the following accepted mediums:
- Paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.)
- Drawings (colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal – must be fixed)
- Collages (must be two-dimensional)
- Prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints)
- Mixed Media (use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.)
- Computer-generated art
- Photographs
Each entry must be entirely original in concept, design, and execution, adhering to U.S. copyright laws. Artwork should not be a copy of an existing photo, painting, or advertisement created by another person. The winning piece must be framed upon selection and cannot exceed 26 inches in height, 26 inches in width, and 4 inches in depth, including the frame. The total weight of the framed piece must not exceed 15 pounds.
Suitability Guidelines
All artwork must comply with the policies of the House Office Building Commission. Pieces that depict contemporary political controversy or are sensationalistic or gruesome in nature may be subject to review and removal.
How to Enter
To participate, students must submit a Student Information and Release Form, which must be completed and signed by the student, a parent or guardian, and an art teacher. The form, along with the artwork, should be securely submitted to Congressman Whitesides’ district office.
For further details, including submission deadlines and additional rules, students and teachers should contact Congressman Whitesides’ office.
“If you know a high school student with a passion for creativity and artistic expression, please encourage them to participate,” Whitesides added. “I can’t wait to see the incredible artwork our district’s students create!”
