Contaminated Gas In Canyon Country Causes Thousands In Damage To Vehicles

Over a dozen Santa Clarita residents have been affected by contaminated gas reportedly sold at a Canyon Country Shell station, racking up thousands of dollars in property damage via service costs and rental vehicle charges.

As of Aug. 9, at least $24,600 in vehicle damages had been incurred as a result of the contaminated gas sold by a gas station in Canyon Country, according to victims who spoke with KHTS.

It was discovered that the Shell station on the corner of Via Princessa and Sierra Highway in Canyon Country allegedly sold gasoline that may have been contaminated with diesel fuel between July 26 and July 31.

“We were out there at least two days last week,” said Ken Pellman, spokesperson for Los Angeles County Weights and Measures Bureau. “There was apparently some contamination, which can happen. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s not so rare that it’s unheard of.”

Issues were found with everything except the 87 octane, also known as regular or unleaded fuel, which continued to be sold through the weekend, according to officials.

“In similar situations elsewhere, what has happened is typically some corrosion in the storage tanks or in the connection from the tanks to the pumps, which can lead to a situation where you get water or diesel leaking in there,” Pellman said

The cost of damages has varied, depending on the severity of maintenance needed and type of vehicle; however, average repairs included new fuel systems and spark plugs, according to several victims, some of whom said they had to pay over $7,600 for repairs.

While the exact number of those affected is unknown, a handful of Santa Clarita residents have banded together in a Facebook group to keep each other apprised of their ongoing claims process.

The group was started by Juhui Yoo, whose 10-day-old car began experiencing issues soon after visiting the Shell station. She said her brand-new vehicle required over $2,650 in damages after filling up with the contaminated gas.

In addition to the dozen people in the Facebook group, she said she has also heard from a handful of others who were affected by the same gas station.

“About three to four people reached out on the app, Nextdoor, claiming they were affected by the particular gas station on Via Princessa as well,” said Yoo. “I met one (other) person at the gas station the day they closed their pumps.”

Alfred Saulo, another Santa Clarita resident, said he has incurred over $5,000 in damages to his vehicle and submitted a claim to Speedway.

“Shell has totally distanced themselves from the issue and have been referring us to claim representatives from Speedway, which is the company representing the station owner for this problem,” said Saulo. “So far we have 11 members on the Facebook group, and we’re sure there are tons more who haven’t been informed.”

Overall, those affected by the contaminated gas have stated that they are pleased with how their case has been handled, even describing some of the claims specialists as “responsive and helpful.”

For anyone who purchased gas at the station during the affected time period and has a vehicle that is experiencing issues, Shell asks that they contact Speedway Customer Service at 1-800-643-1948.
