Deadline Approaching, Santa Clarita Residents Must Get REAL ID Soon

Santa Clarita residents are being urged to get their REAL ID as soon as possible before the upcoming federal deadline.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has set May 7, 2025, as the deadline for when standard driver’s licenses or identification cards are expected to no longer be accepted for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities, making the REAL ID essential for anyone traveling.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, was designed to enhance security measures by establishing stricter standards for state-issued IDs.

Beginning in May 2025, travelers over the age of 18 are required to get a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights unless they use a U.S. passport or another federally approved form of identification.

To obtain a REAL ID in California, residents must visit a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and provide specific documents, including:

  • Proof of identity (such as a valid passport or birth certificate),
  • Proof of Social Security number, and two documents verifying California residency (such as a utility bill or rental agreement)

Appointments can be scheduled in advance to help streamline the process and ensure timely receipt of a REAL ID.

The DMV strongly advises Californians to apply for their REAL ID sooner rather than later to avoid long lines and processing delays as the deadline approaches.

For those who do not plan to travel by air or enter federal buildings requiring ID verification, a REAL ID may not be necessary.

However, officials encourage residents to get the updated identification to ensure they are prepared for any future travel or security needs.

Having a REAL ID now can prevent inconveniences later.

  1. MUST get a RealID is very misleading…ever heard of a Passport before, which supercedes a RealID period.
