Once a month, the members of the Sierra Hillbillies Square Dance Club mossy on down to the Valencia United Methodist Church for their dance.
This month, club members came together to dance with the theme of lucky leprechaun.
While the big dances are once a month, there are classes at Valencia Meadows Park every week from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
“It’s really easy, there’s no fancy footwork in square dance,” said David Neil, president of the Sierra Hillbillies Square Dance Club. “You don’t have to have a partner either. Even if you do have a partner with eight people, you keep changing partners.”
So, if you have ants in your pants and need to dance, the Sierra Hillbillies welcomes all with no age requirements.
One of the best parts about square dancing is that it is the same moves no matter where you go.
“In the beginning class, you’ll learn about 50 different calls and that’s the same thing you would learn anywhere else,” said Neil.
While learning 50 moves may seem daunting, dance instructor Janienne Alexander takes her time to ensure the whole class understands what they are doing.
“Our instructor is phenomenal, very patient and totally understands,” said new member Durk Marks. His wife Cindy Marks added, “She’s very positive and tells you you’re doing this really well or let’s look at this one and break it down in little pieces so you can follow.”
Besides dancing, the club also has social events.
“We’ll go to a restaurant and all meetup. It’s a social club, so we’ll meet up and eat together,” said club member Shannon Smith.
Those who do not want to dance or feel ready to dance at the big events can still come to hang out at all events and classes.
If you are not a member of the club but are interested in joining the club welcomes newcomers to watch one of the classes at no cost.
