Santa Clarita’s resident racing dachshund, Oakley, is currently competing to be on the front cover of Modern Dog and is asking for support from the community to help win.
“We would just love for Santa Clarita residents to support Oakley,” said Rylee Vanderhorst, Oakley’s owner.

Oakley is a one-year-old weiner dog who had taken second place after competing in the Wienerschnitzel Weiner National race, where over a hundred dachshunds compete to be the fastest weiner in the country.
To help Oakley win the upcoming competition to grace the cover of Modern Dog, supporters can vote online to be in the top 20 by Saturday, Feb. 10 and make it to the next round of votes.
“Oakley is currently at number two, but we’re trying to get him to number one,” said Vanderhorst.
Once Oakley has passed the first round, there is a second, where he is set to need even more votes from the community in order to be featured on the cover of Modern Dog magazine.
“If we win we want to donate the proceeds to a shelter but we just want people to know that if they have a pet, (it’s) for life and several years and not just when they are puppies,” said Vanderhorst.
Rylee and her husband are both Santa Clarita natives who recently moved back to the city and were eager to have animals.
The couple had adopted two rescue cats and not long after adopted Oakley, who would go on to compete in the Wienerschnitzel Weiner Nationals.

Born and raised on a farm, before being adopted by Rylee and her husband, Oakley had free range to run around all the time.
The winner for the Modern Dog competition is set to be announced on Friday, April 12.
