Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital To Screen Diabetes Epidemic Documentary ‘Blood Sugar Rising’

In an effort to inform Santa Clarita residents of the ever-growing diabetes epidemic across the nation, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is inviting the public to a free screening of “Blood Sugar Rising” next week.

“Blood Sugar Rising” provides an “eye-opening look at the growing epidemic of diabetes in the United States of America” and is scheduled to screen next week to inform Santa Clarita residents how diabetes is affecting people of all ages.

“Diabetes and pre-diabetes affect over 100 million people in the US, costing more than $325 billion each year,” read a statement from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). “It’s now predicted that one in three children born since 2000 will develop the disease.”

The two-hour screening connects human faces to these statistics, as the documentary explores the history and science of the illness through portraits and voices of Americans whose stories shape the documentary, according to PBS officials.

“Together, they present a dramatic depiction of this hidden national crisis,” read a statement from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “The two-hour special also reveals new hopes: from the rise of safer and easier medical treatments to new discoveries about lifestyle and environmental factors, Blood Sugar Rising reports on those taking action to improve diabetes management and prevention.”

The film is expected to be screened on campus at the Henry Mayo Center at 23803 McBean Parkway in Valencia on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m.

Light refreshments are expected to be made available.

“We hope you can join us for the screening and urge you to take a stride toward preventing any future diabetes complications, whether it be through prevention or management,” read a statement from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “We want you to know we are in this fight together.”
