The Golden Toast celebrates those politicians and leaders which participate in the Childhood Cancer Caucus and help with the advocacy which propagates more funding and awareness concerning childhood cancers.

Among those politicians invited to the Golden Toast is Steve Knight (R-Palmdale), who not only joined the Caucus in his first term, but has also been active in presenting legislation to Congress concerning this “neglected” field of medical research.

“The Summit celebrates the work of our congressional leaders who are trying to make change in research,” said Janet Demeter, founder of Jack’s Angels. “Steve Knight is so important because his bill is the only bill, that I know of, that directly confronts the issue that pediatric cancer doesn’t receive adequate funding.”

During the 144th Congress, Rep. Steve Knight introduced HR 586, a bill that asks for greater consideration for pediatric and high-risk cancers in the medical research system. Now, during the 145th Congress, Knight has reintroduced the bill, but under the new name HR 69.

“The bill brings attention to the neglect in the standard treatment protocol and terminal prognosis for DIPG and pediatric brain tumors, things that haven’t changed in 50 years,” said Demeter.

The National DIPG Awareness Resolution and summit for the Childhood Cancer Caucus comes during the month of September, the month that since 2010 has been nationally recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The month is denoted with a gold ribbon.

“Cancer is the leading disease-related death in children in the United States but pediatric cancer is the least funded area of cancer research both within our government and private sector funding,” said Demeter. “The point of the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and ‘going gold’ is to let people understand the huge need for pediatric cancer research.”
