Memorial Day in Santa Clarita is set to honor those who have been awarded Purple Heart medals during a special ceremony next week.
Next Monday is Memorial Day, and the Santa Clarita Valley is ready to celebrate in remembrance of our veterans and active military.
“We look forward to another year in which we come together as a community to honor our military service members who gave so much and hope you will join us,” said Rick Barker, member of the Santa Clarita Valley Valley Veterans Memorial Committee.
The theme for this year’s Memorial Day ceremony is set to focus on Purple Heart medal recipients.
Keynote speaker Bill Hutton, a U.S. Marine and Purple Heart recipient is set to reflect on his military experience and veteran community.
Wounded three times during his last tour in Vietnam, Hutton once led his company against a well-fortified North Vietnamese machine gun bunkers for two days in 1966.
After completing his service, Hutton joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), where he served for more than 35 years. During his service with the department as a law enforcement officer, Hutton was awarded the Medal of Bravery and Distinguished Service Award for his heroic actions in saving his partner’s life in 1993.
Hutton has also been an integral member of the Military Order of the Purple Hearts organization, a source of great pride.
The event is set to begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, at Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary in Newhall. Parking will be available across cemetery grounds, with golf cart rides offered to assist attendees in accessing the ceremony site.
