Santa Clarita residents can expect to feel more triple-digit temperatures in this week’s weather forecast as a new month rolls in.
The current heat wave is already being felt throughout the valley, but beginning Wednesday, the National Weather Service is placing Santa Clarita on an excessive heat warning.
The excessive heat warning is expected to carry out until Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
To avoid heat-related illnesses, it is strongly advised that everyone stay hydrated and out of the sun during excessive heat warnings.
While the temperature outside may not seem like a factor in one’s health, it is the number one cause of weather related-fatalities in the United States, according to the National Weather Service.
Symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Irritability
- Thirst
- Heavy sweating
- Elevated body temperature
- Decreased urine output
To care for someone suffering from heat-related illness, the CDC recommends the following:
- Take the patient to a clinic or emergency room for medical evaluation and treatment.
- Call 911 if medical care is unavailable.
- Have someone stay with the ill person until help arrives.
- Remove the patient from the hot area and give liquids to drink.
- Remove unnecessary clothing, including shoes and socks.
- Cool off with cold compresses, or have the person wash their head, face and neck with cold water.
- Encourage frequent sips of cool water.
Where to go during the heat?
For residents without adequate air conditioning, there are several spots around Santa Clarita to cool off, including city and county libraries, The Cube and the aquatic center.
