The proposed Valencia Valley School fence has been a controversial issue for the district.

A group, mostly members of the Valencia Central Valley neighborhood, argue that a fence would disrupt the seamless property line without providing much security, while administrators noted a recent public safety analysis called for the fence to make the campus more secure.

A call to the homeowners association, PMP Management, which manages the property, was not immediately returned.

Newhall School officials argued the border would create a central entrance and exit for the campus, making the tracking of visitors easier.

“A fence would give the school one central in-and-out point,” explained Smith. “This gives more control to the school staff on the people that get on school grounds.”

Here is a look at the three options being discussed:

The fence at Valenica Valley is part of an ongoing effort by the district to bolster security around their schools.

The district has already partially fenced off Meadows and Old Orchard Elementary.

“The Newhall board is committed to the safety of our students,” said Smith. “We are currently working on a compromise to protect the students while keeping our community unique.”

The options will be discussed at the June 6 school board meeting.

  1. At one time, it made sense to have these open campuses, and share facilities between parks and schools. However, the need for security is paramount, and has to override the aesthetics of a fence, I’m afraid.
