College of the Canyons is mourning the loss of a longtime math professor who recently passed away, school officials announced.
Charlie Johnson, 52, a math professor at the college passed away Friday, March 21, COC officials announced.
“Charlie was well-respected as an instructor who ignited his students’ curiosity while maintaining high standards and encouraging teamwork,” COC officials said. “This theme of teamwork extended to his efforts within the college’s math department, where he was valued as someone willing to offer his suggestions but always in a respectful and thoughtful manner.”
Johnson taught a wide range of courses from pre-algebra through differential equations and calculus.
He pioneered and embraced technology in the classroom, as well as the difficult job of teaching mathematics online, COC staff said.
Johnson received his bachelor’s degree from UCLA and his master’s from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
As a highly disciplined individual, Johnson played the roles of father to two daughters, husband, professor, and competitive martial arts athlete, according to officials.
