The Perseid meteor shower will once again light up the skies over Santa Clarita from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Known for their bright streaks and high activity, the Perseids can produce 50–100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.
However, this year’s display coincides with a waning gibbous moon, whose glare will make spotting all but the brightest meteors more difficult.
The best viewing times for the Perseids in 2025 will be between dusk and moonrise on Tuesday, Aug. 12, and during the predawn hours of Wednesday, Aug. 13, according to NASA
The Perseids occur when Earth passes through debris left behind by comets and broken asteroids. When these particles collide with our atmosphere and burn up, they create fiery, colorful streaks in the sky.
The Perseids originate from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which takes 133 years to orbit the Sun. Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli first linked the comet to the Perseids in 1865.
Swift-Tuttle last visited the inner solar system in 1992.
