A Valencia resident found what he thought could be a possible noose hanging in a tree near Charles Helmers Elementary School during a hike Monday night.

On Monday, Christian Nelson was on one of his normal hikes on the trails behind Helmers Elementary off of Grandview Drive when he discovered something that “disgusted” him.
“I noticed what I thought was a rope in a tree, so I walked all the way up to get a better look at it,” the life-long Valencia resident said. “That’s when I realized it was a noose.”
Nelson tried to take it down with his bare hands when he found it, but the noose was tied so tightly that he had to come back the next morning to cut it down with a boxcutter.
“A lot of walkers and joggers come up here, and I just didn’t want a lot of people to see it,” he said. “I wouldn’t want anyone to see that and feel threatened or uncomfortable in their own neighborhood.”

Officials with the Anti-Defamation League describe the noose as “one of the most powerful visual symbols directed against African-Americans,” and is used to “intimidate or harass African-Americans.”
“It’s kind of a traumatic thing to see in your own neighborhood,” Nelson said. “I’m kind of at a loss for words.”
While he was “deeply saddened” by the discovery, Nelson also said that he “wasn’t surprised.”

“I’ve grown up in this town my whole life, and it’s predominantly a white affluent town that looks out for their own, so this is kind of just a reminder that these things aren’t as far away as you think,” he said. “This stuff goes on everywhere. You can never think that it’s not within your own community.”
After reports of the noose circulated social media Monday night, units with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrived to investigate shortly after Nelson had cut it down.

When asked what he would say to the person who put the noose up, Nelson had three words: “Change is coming.”
“Things have changed, and times are changing,” he said. “We’re in the middle of a historical movement right now, and I think a lot of people have just been fed up for a very long time. It’s time to change, because the rest of us are fed up and things are going to be different now.”

really there are no tell tale signs of African America with the covert there are a lot of depressed people and why bring race into it to repeat there are no signs of that it could be used as a swing from kids since it was tightly bound to the tree. No need to jump conclusion and create hatred.

In my lifetime I have NEVER known children to swing from a noose for fun or for a depressed person to hang one as some sort of cry for help. I have however heard of them being found in community as a warning for people of color. Most resently there was one found in a NASCAR garage, do you think a child or someone who is depresed left that one in Bubba’s garage? This is exactly the problem in this community. People being unwilling to address the racism. STOP MAKING EXCUSES, people are hurting and they are scared. What’s wrong with you? Whether the tied rope was intended to be a noose or not, it still looked like a noose, and therefore was rightfully removed for safety and for symbolic reasons.. There have been two hangings within the last couple of weeks. That should have been reason enough to remove anything that remotely resembled a noose. Some called the rope a harmless swing; well that’s just plain idiotic.

It is no secret that there is a significant racial divide in our community. Someone asked why race should be brought into this. Well, it is long overdue. The First picture at the top of this story magnified just a little bit on my computer clearly show it’s not a slip type noose knot, the rope has been woven into itself to form a permanent non slip type loop, with a knot approximately every foot or so including the knot a foot just above the fixed loop, it’s clearly a climbing rope that has been there for some time, look at the bark on the supporting branch, all the bark has broken away do to climbing on or whatever,
I for one have played on similar type TREE climbing ropes many times as kid on land or over WATER,
IMO, I think the photos were purposely not taken to reveal the true image of the extended climbing rope that is wound up around the large branch so as to get just these kind of comments from a few, things are not always what they seem to be folks,
Parents usually worry about kids accidentally strangling themselves when goofing around with ropes,& therefore supervise. Right? And then the parent leaves it there? That theory doesn’t work.

Further examination of the first photo at the top of the article will show that the climbing rope is clearly wrapped around the branch 6+ times, IF…… it was unwrapped and extended down for use/play revealing the spaced out climbing knots next to the standing Good Samaritan, the fixed loop would be approximately a foot and a half off the ground, but then again, that would have been a non story, SAD

Am I missing something here? If it is a hate crime, why is the evidence being casually tossed into the trash? Also, it’s so coincidentally dramatic that Michael Brown is there to document this terrible community shaking event, only to photograph the tossing of the, unofficially inspected by proper authorities, evidence. 1 – according to the comments, assuming they are true, the rope was reported on 5/17. Based on the date alone we can’t say 100% that it was racially motivated
2 – unless that was a re-enactment, the rope was at the top of the hill off a fire road in a secluded area which means we can’t rule out someone considering suicide

This guys a knuckle head and to call the media and stage this video story to show him cutting down a kids rope swing (which he calls a “noose”) and to bring such negative publicity to our city without any proof is just plain careless. It’s a kids swing plain and simple with some grip knots up the rope so they could hold it better and the length looks like it’s a swing length. You can also see the bark on the tree gone from most likely where the rope has been rubbing it for awhile. Kids who made this swing would just leave the rope up there for next time. We had them when I was growing up. They sell ropes made like this over the counter. But to sensationalize this by calling a reporter and not the police to investigate is horrible. It scares the hell out of all people that believe it when the clueless reporter wrongly calls it a noose along with this knucklehead Nelson guy. What’s crazy is Nelson says he doesn’t want anyone to feel threatened or uncomfortable in their own neighborhood. Guess what dude you just did exactly that! What the heck is the matter with this Mr. Nelson guy who became instantly traumatized upon finding a “noose”.
First let’s get one thing straight, Nelson’s self-described “trauma” at seeing this rope in a tree seems to correspond with Nascar’s Bubba Wallace “trauma” claim that he discovered a “noose” that someone allegedly placed in his race car garage as a “racial threat” and all the special attention he received. It was a false claim, so Mr. Nelson, so you no longer have to be traumatized about Bubba.
Second, take a very close look at the end of the “noose” you found. It’s not a slip knot dummy. It is a standard loop woven into the rope end, which is probably a worn out old toe rope for water skiing. The photos suggest that it was likely in the tree for quite a while and almost certainly put there by kids as a swing.
Thirdly, if you really believed it to be a “noose”, why did you disturb it and throw it in the trash rather than have the police examine the “evidence”? So my question to you is did you do all of this to get yourself a couple minutes of attention, or are you really dumb enough to not know the difference between a manufacture’s-made loop end of a tow rope and a hang man’s slop knot noose?
In the last month there were three hangings on trees of black people that resulted in death, two in California, one in Victorville & one in Lancaster. This is horrifying. I hope this one was not another attempted one in our area. Only good thing there was not a dead body attached like the other three that happened. This is beyond comprehension for me and extremely devastating, bring back memories of the horrors of past history that I thought I would never see in my lifetime.
You know Victorville was a confirmed suicide right. Other one is still under investigation.

When there is no real racism present the left actually has to make it up. It is important to do because they must keep this narrative going in order to gain and keep more power. We live in a wonderful community. We attend churches with much diversity and love and care about each other. We have neighbors of all races and love and care for each other. We work together and attend school together, and love and care for each other. We marry each other. Our families are mixed. We adopt children from other cultures. Clearly Christian’s white cotton t shirt is directed against African-Americans, and clearly it is being used to make them feel threatened and uncomfortable.
