Prayer Angels For The Military is set to host the 14th Annual Military Honor Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting next week to celebrate current and veteran military personnel.
The nonprofit organization is a military support group that reaches out to deployed service members, offering prayers, letters and care packages to wounded warriors, hospitalized veterans, homeless veterans and military families facing hardships, according to event organizers.
“Besides the Christmas season, it’s also a time when active duty (military officials) are away for the holidays, and a time that we remember our veterans and our fallen heroes,” said Suzon Gerstel, president of Prayer Angels for the Military.
Event officials encourage the Santa Clarita community and military families to attend and experience the red, white and blue Christmas tree and Menorah lighting.
“We’re a close-knit community and I think that with an event like this, you really see it,” said Gerstel. “It’s meant to be a touching ceremony.”
During the event, laminated photos of past and present military members are set to be hung from the tree, according to officials.
“When we first started, a lot of us, our children were at war,” Gerstel said. “So we had a lot of families worried about their children, needing to get together, and we thought this would be cool to hang laminated stars of our sons in combat on the tree, and veterans as well, and to have a time to honor them and think about them.”
The event is scheduled to be hosted by former Assemblyman Dante Acosta and feature a guest speaker: Navy fighter pilot and Congressional candidate Mike Garcia.
Also included in the program are the Messick Family Singers as well as musical artists John and Marina Stratton, according to event organizers.
Hot cocoa, coffee and holiday treats are expected to be provided as residents gather to hear a few words, pray for the military, enjoy Christmas songs and carols and watch the lighting of the Military Honor Christmas Tree and Hanukkah Menorah, organizers said.
The community is invited to join the festivities at the Veterans Historical Plaza in Newhall from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 7.
