Providence Holy Cross Ranked As One of the Best Places To Work In Healthcare

In one of the most “challenging” years on record for healthcare workers, three Providence Southern California medical centers, including Holy Cross were honored as the only hospitals in the state and among just 45 nationwide to make Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare list for 2020, officials said.

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, which made the prestigious list for the second straight year, No. 592 St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton ranked No. 22; and Mission Hospital, with campuses in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach, No. 72, according to Providence.

The list included 75 health providers and insurance organizations.

“The excellence and commitment of our doctors and caregivers have created an extraordinary culture and work environment — one that makes extraordinary care possible,” said Brian Helleland, chief executive, St. Jude Medical Center. “Being named the best hospital in the state and one of the best in the country for places to work helps explain St. Jude’s list of national honors for quality and patient safety. Both accomplishments reflect the uniqueness of the physicians and caregivers who work inside these walls.”

Like many of the honorees, Providence responded to employees’ concerns by allowing them to work from home when feasible and providing flexibility for work/life balance when schools closed, according to officials.

Modern Healthcare is a leading trade magazine for the healthcare industry, according to officials.

Published weekly, it is the go-to for healthcare leaders, including hospital executives, consultants and support organizations.. Its annual Best Places to Work list spotlights success in nurturing employee satisfaction, a true challenge this year as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our communities.

“It has been an especially trying year for the world, and health care in particular as COVID-19 ravages our communities and your workplaces,” said Aurora Aguilar, Modern Healthcare’s editor. “But the organizations recognized on this year’s list rose to the top and continued to be a source of strength for their teammates.”

This award program identifies and recognizes outstanding employers in the healthcare industry nationwide, according to officials.

Modern Healthcare partners with the Best Companies Group on the assessment process, which includes an extensive employee survey.

“How these organizations have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic is only part of the story; they were also scored on more traditional measures such as benefit design, transparent communication from leadership and others,” according to the magazine.

Providence offers a full range of benefits, wellness programs, opportunities for career advancement, tuition reimbursement and nurse shared governance to advance bedside care, according to officials.

“St. Jude, Holy Cross and Mission have raised the bar for Providence as a top employer,” added Erik G. Wexler, chief executive, Providence Southern California. “I thank every single caregiver for their commitment to the work they do and congratulate our leaders who continuously engage their staff and empower them to provide the best for our patients.”

Last year, Wexler budgeted $1 million for each of the 11 Providence hospitals under his executive direction to develop projects to thank employees.
