Public Asked To Give Feedback On SCV Water Groundwater Sustainability Plan Draft

Santa Clarita Valley Water (SCV Water) is inviting residents of the area to give feedback on its Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP), a drafted plan for managing local groundwater and protecting it from overuse.

SCV Water is inviting the public to attend the final workshop for the draft of the GSP over Zoom on Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and give feedback.

“Careful management of the basin will help safeguard this important resource against drought and ensure a reliable and enduring water supply for the Santa Clarita Valley,” said B.J. Atkins, president of the Santa Clarita Valley Groundwater Sustainability Agency (SCV-GSA) Board of Directors.

The workshop is set to be the eighth and final public forum for the public to ask questions in real-time and weigh in on the plan to help sustain the basin, including on proposed projects and management actions.

A public hearing on the final plan is scheduled for Dec. 15.

Santa Clarita Valley gets about half of its drinking and agricultural irrigation water from the Santa Clara River Valley East Subbasin.

Without the local resource, water providers would have to purchase more expensive water
imported from hundreds of miles away.

Work on the GSP for the basin began in 2017 and has involved a groundwater flow model, analysis and input from groups who depend on water from the Santa Clara River Valley East Subbasin.

The GSP outlines a plan to balance the flow of water in and out of the basin within 20 years to keep water levels even.

The plan is based on sources and uses of water and projected changes such as population growth and climate change.

The GSP is also meant to fit the needs of the community, drawing on the perspectives of pumpers, environmental and business interests and the community at large, which were represented on a Stakeholder Advisory Committee.

Log in details for the Zoom meeting and a comment form can be found on the SCV-GSA website, along with videos and fact sheets from previous workshops, which focused on topics such as groundwater conditions, sustainable management criteria and groundwater-dependent ecosystems.

The GSP is required under the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA).

  1. Build a water line from water treatment plant to the river in Canyon Country and let recycled water recharge the water table.
