The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and community members across Los Angeles County are remembering the loss of Deputy Alfredo “Freddy” Flores, a 22-year veteran who died after a malfunction training explosion at Pitchess Detention Center.

Flores died two years ago after a months-long battle with injuries he suffered during the training explosion in October 2023 at the Pitchess Detention Center, according to officials.

The incident occurred during a firearm re-certification training inside a mobile shooting range trailer, where an equipment malfunction sparked a fire and explosion, leaving Flores critically injured.

Despite months of medical treatment he ultimately passed due to his injuries, according to family representatives.

“It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Flores who valiantly fought for his life after sustaining severe injuries in the line of duty,” his family said in a statement. “Freddy was an amazing and loving husband, father, son, and brother. He loved working for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and dedicated his life to serving and protecting our community.”

Beyond the badge, Flores is remembered as a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Maggie, and their children, Victoria, Kayla, Nathaniel and Adrian, according to the family’s legal team.

Throughout his more than two decades with LASD, Flores served in several assignments, including the Sylmar Juvenile Court, Altadena Station, Court Services West Bureau and the North County Correctional Facility.

“He was well-respected in the Department and in the community, and his passing will leave a huge void in the hearts of many who knew him,” the department said in a statement.

Following his death, the Flores family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit tied to the training incident, represented by attorney Joe A. Nunez and others.

Per Los Angeles Superior Court documents, the wrongful death lawsuit remains ongoing.
