Remembering The Fire Station 81 Shooting Two Years Later

Thursday marks the two-year anniversary of the Station 81 shooting in Agua Dulce.

On June 1, 2021, an off-duty firefighter returned to fire station 81 in Agua Dulce where he fatally shot firefighter specialist Tory Carlon  and injured Captain Arnaldo Sandoval

“Remembering a great Fireman, Father, Husband and Son on the two-year anniversary of his senseless murder,” said officials with Los Angeles County Fire Station 81 in a Facebook post

Carlon had succumbed to his injuries at the scene while Sandoval was transported to the hospital and recovered from his injuries.

After the shooting, the suspect, off-duty firefighter Jonathan P. Tatone, had returned to his home lighting it on fire and shortly after took his own life before law enforcement could approach the home.

Carlon died at the age of 44, leaving behind his wife Heidi and his three daughters.

Carlon’s death came just days before his daughter Joslyn Carlon graduated from Saugus High School.

Although Joslyn lost her father, firefighters from all over California flooded College of the Canyons on the ground and in the air to show her support.

During Joslyn’s graduation, she wore her slain father’s fire jacket over her shoulders, and received a huge round of applause from her classmates and all the first responders in attendance.

The Carlon family has since brought a wrongful death lawsuit against L.A. County and Tatone’s estate, stating that the LACoFD had been aware of Tatone’s “dangerous conduct” for years.

Sandoval also brought a suit against the county and Tatone’s estate, alleging assault and battery as well as negligence on the part of the county.
