Santa Clarita Amgen Tour Of California Race Route Announced

The Santa Clarita Amgen Tour of California race route for 2019 was announced Thursday, a route set to pass through the city during the seven-day, 773-mile course, officials said.

The race is scheduled to start on May 12 and finish on May 18, starting in Sacramento and ending in Pasadena, according to officials.

Throughout the seven-day race, cyclists will ride approximately 120 miles a day on mountain roads, highways and coastlines.

Riders are expected to pass through 13 cities, including Santa Clarita, and experience over 68,000 feet of elevation gain throughout their journey, according to officials.

On Saturday, May 18, the City of Santa Clarita will host the start of the final stages for both the men’s race (Stage 7) and women’s race (Stage 3).

The stages will start in Santa Clarita and travel 87.6 miles to the finish line in Pasadena. This is the 10th year the city has hosted the race, and brings the total number of stages hosted in Santa Clarita to 14, according to officials.

“We always have a spectacular time hosting this world-class cycling event here in Santa Clarita. Historically our city has hosted stage finishes, so we are excited to be doing things a little different this year by hosting the start for the final stages of both the men’s and women’s races,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “We want to encourage residents to come out to enjoy the excitement and support the cyclists.”

The stages starting in Santa Clarita are scheduled to begin at the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall.

The route will then turn north out of the city on Soledad Canyon Road, through the Antelope Valley into Acton. The course is then expected to turn onto Aliso Canyon Road, where riders are set to work their way onto the Angeles Forest Highway and into the Angeles National Forest.

The first climb is set to come at Mill Creek Summit, then downhill and left onto Upper Big Tujunga to the final climb of the race at the intersection with the Angeles Crest Highway.

The race is set to be a downhill ride as the participants pass Redbox and Mt. Wilson. A quick dash through La Canada Flintridge will take the race down Rosemont Avenue to the finish line at the Rose Bowl.
