Santa Clarita Blue Heat Soccer Player Heading To FIFA Women’s World Cup.

As the FIFA Women’s World Cup approaches, fans of Team USA are dusting off their jerseys to support their favorite player.

This year Santa Clarita has skin in the game with former Blue Heat player Alyssa Thompson participating in the games.

The 2020 – 2021 Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year Thompson was the number one overall pick in the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft going to Angel City FC at the age of 18.

With being drafted to Angel City FC, Thompson became the first high school-aged player and youngest draft pick in NWSL history.

On Oct. 7, 2022, against England, then 17-year-old Thompson made her US Women’s National Team (USWNT) debut when she replaced Megan Rapinoe at the 84-minute mark of the game.

Thompson was the youngest player to debut for the USA since January of 2016 when Mallory Pugh made her debut at 17 years.

In a match against the Republic of Ireland on April 11 of this year, Thompson made her USWNT debut and played the entire 90 minutes, becoming the team’s first teenage starter since 2018.

For those looking to cheer on Thompson and the rest of Team USA as they kick off the games against Vietnam visit The Cube for a watch party with food and games starting at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Group Stage Schedule:

  • Friday, July 21, 6 p.m. vs Vietnam
  • Wednesday, July 26, 6 p.m. vs Netherlands
  • Tuesday, Aug. 1, 12 a.m. vs Portugal
