Santa Clarita Project Linus’ Spring Make-A-Blanket Day Helps Children In Need

The Santa Clarita community came together by donating materials and assisting with crafting blankets at the Make-A-Blanket event hosted by Project Linus.

On Saturday at the East Gym within the College of The Canyons Valencia campus, Project Linus hosted their annual Make-A-Blanket day from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. The community was urged to donate blankets and fleece material to assist in creating the blanket.

Project Linus is a non-profit organization that provides handmade blankets to children, ages ranging from newborns to 18-year-olds, facing trauma, illness, or severe hardships. Zachary Reimbold, SCV Project Linus’ student president, goes in depth into why these blankets are important to their cause.

“The purpose of making these blankets is to give a warm sense of care to children in need and especially those who are going through trauma and severe experiences,” said Reimbold.

Reimbold mentioned that they started 6 months in advance to prepare for the Make-A-Blanket day, considered to be their biggest event of the year. They have a team of 30 students organizing the entire event, down to accepting donations, organizing each donated blanket and shipping them out.

At the Make-A-Blanket day event, participants volunteer by creating a tie-fleece blanket with the material they brought. Many of the volunteers have their family and friends with them to help create these blankets, crafting special memories together for a great cause.

Sam Conson, the student vice president of SCV Project Linus, stated how wonderful it is that so many people showed up to the event.

“This is the fourth time I’ve assisted in the Make-A-Blanket day and honestly, I’m very proud about this one. This is my favorite event out of all the ones we host because it feels so lively and there’s so many people joining us today. I’m really proud that we came together and made these blankets,” stated Conson.

Reimbold concluded his thoughts with a touching story behind why he loves working for Project Linus.

“When I was born, I was in the NICU for two weeks with a severe kidney infection. I was also separated from my mother who was suffering from cancer. So, being able to be a part of helping children who are going through something similar is such an incredible cause to be able to work for,” Reimbold lamented.

SCV Project Linus has delivered 20,357 blankets so far and continues to make and ship blankets to youth struggling with traumatic incidents. To check out more about Project Linus’ events in Santa Clarita, check out their website HERE.
