A recent study found that Santa Clarita ranked in the top 10 worst cities for dog parks.
LawnStarter compared 98 of the biggest U.S. cities based on access, quality and climate.
Their method of determining used an assigned weighting system to each factor based on its importance and grouped those factors into three categories of access, quality, and climate.
For each city, LawnStarter generated scores out of 100 points to establish its position in each category, factor, and overall.
The average of a city’s scores for all criteria and categories is its overall score.
For each category they looked at different criteria such as
- Average number of cold/hot days
- Average monthly precipitation
- Average monthly percentage of sunshine
- Average number of reviews per dog park
- Average consumer rating for dog parks
To get deeper into finding whose parks are the best they factored in the number of dog parks per 100,000 two-legged residents, visitor ratings, and historical weather data, among eight total metrics.
After conducting their research LawnStarters determined Santa Clarita ranked as the 8th worst dog park city in the U.S.

KHTS Radio Santa Clarita Radio – Santa Clarita News
This was a useless popularity contest. It should have looked at far more factual and useful statistics like:
1. Dog Parks per X thousand people,
2. Average distance to nearest dog park,
3. Dog Park facilities: parking, restrooms, trash,
4. Separate areas for small and timid dogs.
Then, objectively and effectively conclude that Los Angeles County is not adequately supporting dog parks. Especially considering the number and dispersion of dog parks in the city of Los Angeles.
County is much more concerned chasing “dog-off-leash criminal’s” in the open areas and National Forests.
I take my dogs to the dog park daily. I wish the city would put up a shade structure at the Canyon Country dog park.
Randi is right – we need shade canopies galore, plus more trees. I noticed they did a modest renovation at the Central Park dog park, but the park in Canyon Country at the end of Ruether and the one off Five Knolls Drive need more shade. Trees and shade canopies would be great. C’mon, City Hall, let’s make this a great city for dog lovers. Speaking of which, I’d love to see a legal place to let a dog splash in some water, or even swim. Wouldn’t that be a feather in our cap?
I have a Labrador. Dogs in the water is a senseless no-no almost everywhere.
There is a fog training fee area near Prado Dam, with water.
The Santa Clara River at Piru usually has water flow. Turn left at Arco on 126.
Piru Creek at Frenchmans Flat always has flow. Just go where there are no people.
Quail Lake has open water. I walk in on-leash and find a place where no one is fishing.
Dogs do not pee or poop in water. Mine uses my pool often, with no complications to the pool. Of course your dog will be off-leash in the water, and that his a Counyt High Crime.
