The Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club rolled up the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center in Canyon Country Tuesday morning with a trailer full of thanksgiving turkeys for seniors.
“In years past we’ve taken turkeys to the food pantry, this year we decided to bring 100 to the senior center, and we’re giving 100 also to the Santa Clarita grocery,” said Dave Reeves, the 2021-2022 President of the Rotary Club of Santa Clarita. “This probably couldn’t have come at a better time because there are so many needy people that would not have had thanksgiving dinner without these turkeys.”
The Senior Center plans to redistribute the turkeys to residents in need as soon as possible, with some deliveries going out that very same day.
“This is such a gift from the Rotary Club of Santa Clarita. We’re able to take 100 turkeys, give them out to the neediest in our community, hand-deliver it to their homes and make sure that they’re going to have a Thanksgiving,” said Kevin MacDonald, CEO of the SCV Senior Center. “If this didn’t happen today that wouldn’t happen for many of those people.”
The Rotary Club also donated another 100 turkeys to Santa Clarita Grocery, another local non-profit providing holiday meals during the winter season.
Since November of 2018, Santa Clarita Grocery has served the community by providing weekly groceries to children, families, seniors and veterans in need. To accommodate the outbreak of COVID-19, they quickly adapted their services for conscientious grocery mobilization.
In a twist of fate, Brose discovered during a conversation with Real Life Church that the congregation had gathered enough donations to provide the sides and fixings for 1000 thanksgiving meals.
“That can give you chills,” Grose said. “We had the turkeys but no fixings, they had the fixings but no turkeys. One hundred each.”
Grose reminds potential donors that every little bit helps, and that
“In a season of Thanksgiving, SCVGrocery is a non-profit all-volunteer organization. We survive on contributions to cover warehouse, water and power, and phone services,” Grose said. “Feel free to make a year-end tax-deductible contribution to keep the good going. We’re stronger together.”
The local Rotary club is part of a worldwide network with over 1.2 million members.
