With Halloween approaching, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s officials are offering tips in an effort to help keep trick-or-treaters safe.

“On Halloween, it’s important to practice basic safety,” said Deputy Kevin Duxbury. “If you have younger children, be sure you accompany them as they go door to door.”
Parents with older children who can go unattended are encouraged to pre-plan what streets they will be on and what time they will be home.
With some trick-or-treaters dressing up in costumes that could be difficult to see at night, it is also recommended to have a flashlight or glow stick, and use caution when crossing streets.
Sheriff’s officials are also warning parents that once trick-or-treaters come home, the danger isn’t always over.
“Kids should refrain from eating any candy they’ve collected while out and about,” Duxbury said. “Once back home, parents should inspect the candy and ensure nothing has been tampered with. Throw away any candy which is not sealed.”
It is also suggested to discard any fresh goods that are given out while collecting candy.
“It is hard to tell if they’ve been tampered with,” Duxbury said.
