Saugus Cafe To Close After 139 Years, Ending Longest-Running Restaurant In L.A. County

After nearly a century and a half of serving the Santa Clarita Valley, the historic Saugus Cafe is preparing to close its doors, marking the end of a legacy that dates back 139 years.

The Saugus Cafe, recognized as the longest-running restaurant in Los Angeles County, will serve its final meals on Jan. 4, according to an employee who spoke with KHTS.

Originally opened in 1886, the Saugus Cafe has been a cornerstone of the community through generations, welcoming locals, travelers and history enthusiasts alike. Over the decades, the restaurant became known not only for its classic American fare, but also for its deep ties to the region’s early railroad and Western history.

The cafe’s longevity earned it a unique place in Los Angeles County history, surviving World Wars, economic downturns, ownership changes, and the rapid growth of the Santa Clarita Valley.

“On behalf of the Saugus Cafe staff and ownership, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to our community for the incredible support you have shown us throughout the years,” stated a letter from the cafe. “For 139 years, Saugus Cafe has been more than just a restaurant it has been a place where memories were made, stories were shared, and generations came together. We are truly honored to have served this community for so long.”

The letter added that the future plans for the building are currently unknown.

Earlier this month, KHTS received information indicating the cafe would remain open during renovations; however, that information has since been confirmed as inaccurate.

  1. Hahaha you clowns redact your last article from last week saying it wasn’t closing. Crappy news source strikes again

  2. Know one has reported that the reason for the Saugus Cafe closure is because the property owners were going to raise the rent so high that the cafe would no longer be financially viable. A sad ending due to greedy property owners!

  3. It would be nice if the Local Heritage Society could get the sign out front to save for posterity.

  4. I told you the Saugus Cafe would be closing!…

Now, KHTS should inform its listeners that Kroger’s is
closing its Food 4 Less location on Soledad Canyon no later than March 20, 2026.

The Ralphs (opened as Hughes) store – located next door will move into the 55,000 sq. ft. Food 4 Less box once it is quickly remodeled.

I believe this is the first time that a Food 4 Less location is being converted into a Ralphs.

This re-located Ralphs will feature traditional full-service supermarket amenities such as: full-service bakery, deli, meat/seafood, Murray’s cheese and floral departments plus a Starbucks. Also, self-serve checkout lanes.

No confirmation if a pharmacy will be included, or where Kroger proposes to locate a pick-up lane for those placing on-line mobile orders. My hunch is those orders will be relegated to designated parking stalls – just as they are today at the current Ralphs next door.

Worthless trivia. Did you know once Ralphs makes its move into the
soon-to-be-former Food 4 Less building, Ralphs will have operated stores at three of the intersections at Soledad Canyon and Whites Canyon?

Lastly – Kroger’s is not permitting Food 4 Less employees to transfer into Ralphs due to the separate union bargaining agreements that pettain to Food 4 Less and Ralphs – unless Kroger’s and the UFCW hammer out an agreement covering both stores…we’ll see.

As of now, all of the Food 4 Less employees will be laid off unless employees have enough seniority to bump employees at other Food 4 Less locations. Closest locations to the SCV are Sylmar, Arleta and the Antelope Valley.

What will go into the soon-to-be former Ralphs? I bet the space gets carved up for use by other retailers.

With increased labor costs and competition from the likes of Aldi and Vallarta – Food 4 Less can’t compete. On the other hand, the re-location of Ralphs will give residents in that part of Canyon Country and Skyline Ranch a much larger store with a nicer shopping experience.

This will be the first Ralphs within the SCV to have the Kroger fruit cart logo next to the Ralphs sign hanging on the outside front of the store.

  5. After surviving nearly 140 years of upheaval—from the Great Depression and the Spanish Flu to two world wars, the Cold War, the 2008 financial crisis, and COVID‑19—it ultimately couldn’t withstand the realities of Gavin Newsom’s California. That speaks volumes.
