SC Flyers Mom Injured In Colorado Crash Released From ICU, Returns Home

Brenda Greenwald, the mom of one of the SC Lady Flyers 12U AA Hockey players injured in a crash last month in Colorado, has been released from the ICU and is back home.

Brenda Greenwald, one of the victims in the SC Lady Flyers crash, suffered multiple injuries, including a torn aorta, a groin artery, and bowels, as well as a brain injury that left her mostly unresponsive.

After multiple surgeries, Brenda has become responsive and is now able to verbally communicate with doctors and family, Lisa Tarr said in an update on a GoFundMe she set up for the family.

Now that Brenda is moving forward in a positive direction, she has been released from the hospital and returned home, according to an update on the GoFundMe.

Three of the Greenwalds’ children also sustained injuries in the crash, resulting in their father, the sole provider, to step away from work to tend to his injured family – putting a financial strain on the family.

“On the morning of Jan. 29th, 2026, a joyful trip for families and members of the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers girls’ hockey team from California turned into a nightmare,” Tarr said in the GoFundMe. “While traveling near Denver, Colorado, a snowplow lost control and struck a sprinter van head-on. Among those on board were Brenda Greenwald and three of her children.”

Joshua, 11, was airlifted to a children’s hospital with an injured spleen, a broken elbow, a fractured nose, and severe facial trauma.

Matthew, 9, suffered from painful contusions across his body.

Emily, 13, suffered physical lacerations and a knee injury and is struggling with the acute psychological trauma of the accident.

Between the ICU stay, multiple surgeries, and the ongoing medical and dental care required for the children, the financial burden is staggering.

“What was supposed to be an exciting trip with good friends to a sporting event we all love, turned into a complete nightmare,” Branda’s husband, Jason Greenwald, said.  “My children are going to be okay physically. But emotionally distraught. After seeing their mother in the hospital, it has really sank in. There are questions I can’t answer. There are things I can’t say to them and don’t know how to. Brenda has a long road to recovery. Me being the sole provider for our family, I will have no choice but to step away from work for an unknown amount of time as to provide care for all my kids and aftercare for my wife. Our world was shattered.”

Any donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference.

As of Friday, the Santa Clarita community has helped the family raise $26,000 of the $35,000 goal.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
