SCV Water Celebrates 25th Anniversary Of Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant

It was 25 years ago this December when the former Castaic Lake Water Agency, now SCV Water, completed the Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant, officials said.

The plant had an initial capacity to treat 30 million gallons per day (mgd). This more than doubled the capacity from the Earl Schmidt Treatment Plant, located near Castaic Lake, according to SCV Water.

Both plants treat imported water. This is roughly half of Santa Clarita’s water supply, which flows from the Sierra Nevada mountain range through the Delta in Northern California before traveling through the California Aqueduct to reach the Santa Clarita Valley.

The RVWTP treats this imported water before it enters the distribution system and is served to customers, according to SCV Water.

In 1991, the former Castaic Lake Water Agency held a ground “blasting” ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of the Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant.

In 2011, the Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant expanded its capacity and doubled the amount of water that could be treated per day from 30 million gallons per day (mgd) to 66 mgd, SCV Water officials said.

It took 876 days, April 27, 2009 – Sept.19, 2011, to complete this expansion, according to SCV Water.

If needed to meet demands, SCV Water has the land and capacity to eventually double the RVWTP capacity again to 120 million gallons per day (mgd).

Annually, SCV Water staff perform over 20,000 tests and analyze samples from 64 drinking water sources for more than 285 drinking water contaminants. Customers can see how well their water performed against the federal and state standards in the annual Consumer Confidence Report here.

  1. Just a couple years ago the drought forced us to lower our water consumption. I cut mine in half right away. I’ve done more since then but I’m paying more than twice as much money than I used to. WTF?

    • The water rates keep going up.
They were mandated to reduce the huge number in their board of directors.
The declined that mandate, and just keep getting more people that they have to pay.
Now they hired twice the number of people for their groundwater board of directors.

The rates are double that of a few years ago, but in the last 20 years they have quadrupled.
A majority of your water bill does not cover the cost of the water that you use.
Hundreds of dollars each year are necessary to cover the huge overhead of so many high payed people working there. It is here even if you dont use any water.
The other utilities(gas and electricity) do not have such high overhead.

The claims of cost savings for the customers are a joke.

  2. So. Cal. Gas & Edison rates also have doubled—-Looks like we’re paying for their mistakes(Porter Ranch leak & transmission line fires, etc.). Greedy board of directors!!
