Residents in Santa Clarita and surrounding communities may notice smoke in the air on Wednesday as the Angeles National Forest (ANF) conducts a prescribed burn near the Texas Canyon Fire Station.
This controlled fire operation is to reduce wildfire risk by clearing overgrown vegetation to protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.
Communities affected by smoke visibility.
- Santa Clarita
- Newhall
- Agua Dulce
- Leona Valley
- Green Valley
- Canyon Country
While there are no road or trail closures to be expected, residents should take precautions, especially for individuals with respiratory problems.
Prescribed burns are a key wildfire mitigation strategy. Reducing overgrown vegetation decreases the likelihood of a catastrophic wildfire, which has impacted Californian communities.
The nature of these controlled burns clears paths for firefighters to manage the process while preventing uncontrollable wildfires.
According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, Santa Clarita residents in the smoke-affected areas should take the following precautions.
- Know your air quality
- If you have an A/C, change your filter often or run a HEPA purifier
- Have a few disposable respirators (ie, N-95 or P-100)
- If you have heart or lung disease, it is recommended to consult your doctor to make a plan and keep more than five days of medication on hand
- It is important that when running a generator during a public shutoff, it must be at least 20 feet away from your home outdoors.
