UPDATE: I-5 To Reopen After Snowfall Closes Grapevine In Both Directions

UPDATE: Northbound and southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine are expected to reopen Thursday evening, after being closed for most of the day due to snow.

Original Story: Snow has begun falling in the Grapevine, which has closed the northbound 5 Freeway in Castaic.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) implemented “Operation Snowflake” Thursday after snow started sticking and poor visibility became low through the Grapevine, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

All northbound 5 Freeway lanes have been closed at Parker Road in Castaic for an unknown duration, according to officials.

Motorists needing to head north can take the westbound Highway 126 to the northbound 101; or take the 14 Freeway to Highway 58 west back to the 5 Freeway.

The 5 Freeway is expected to remain closed for an unknown amount of time until visibility improves and the snow is cleared from the roadway.

Conditions and alternate route closures can be verified by calling Caltrans Highway Info at (800) 427-ROAD.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
