The member of Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s staff joined KHTS owner Carl Goldman to discuss her new position and several issues the supervisor’s office is concerned with.

Two months ago, Stephanie English became the field deputy for Kathryn Barger, who represents Santa Clarita as part of the Fifth District.
English filled the vacancy left by Rosalind Wayman, who retired from her position after 12 years of service to the county under both Supervisor Barger and Barger’s predecessor, Michael Antonovich.
“I was working for her downtown as the Supervisor’s public safety policy deputy, but when Rosalind Wayman decided to retire, there was an opportunity for me to decide if I wanted to come back home, and it was just too appealing,” said English.
Prior to her two years as Barger’s public safety policy deputy, she worked as the community services liaison for the Los Angeles County Fire Department for 10 years.
To service the more than two million citizens of the Fifth District, the Barger’s team maintains five field offices, one of which is located in Santa Clarita on Tourney Road.
English addressed how the office manages to serve such a large, diverse constituency concerned with a wide variety of issues.
“We meet regularly, the supervisor is very well informed of all the issues and what’s going on and is very, very engaged in the nuts and bolts of all of her district,” said English. “It seems hard to believe, but the staff really does a great job of bringing her up to speed, informing her, keeping her engaged, and it’s working very, very well.”
Recently, English was on hand when Barger surprised executives of the SCV Senior Center with a $500,000 check to help them close the gap on the remaining funds needed to complete the new senior center building.
Beyond their contributions to existing projects, the Supervisor’s office has fielded complaints from residents about issues currently affecting them, including the larger than usual increase in traffic many have experienced this holiday season.
“We already had a preliminary meeting with some executives at Caltrans to look at the Christmas holiday traffic and what they can immediately do to try to mitigate some of that,” said English. “Caltrans is very engaged, very interested in working with the parties to bring whatever resolutions we can.”
Though she has only held her new post for two months, English is relishing her position as well as her return to Santa Clarita.
“It’s just been wonderful, it’s really been great to be back here. I’m really having fun,” English said.
