Stuntman Sues Oak Tree Gun Club After Reportedly Being Shot In The Back

A stuntman is suing Oak Tree Gun Club, along with several other entities, for negligence after he claims he was shot in the back while auditioning for a role.

Stuntman Alex Schoenauer was reportedly auditioning for a role with JMP Productions, which works with the CBS shows “S.W.A.T.” and “Seal Team,” when the incident is said to have occurred back in September of 2018.

“(Schoenauer) was shot in the upper torso with a semi-automatic assault rifle while auditioning for a stuntman role,” reads the lawsuit filed by Schoenauer’s lawyers.

Both Schoenauer and a stuntwoman were sent to a certified firearms instructor at Oak Tree  Gun Club in Santa Clarita to train for a role, according to court documents.

The instructor reportedly staged a scene for the two, where Schoenauer was supposed to “burst through a doorway” with the stuntwoman behind him.

“Both rifles were loaded with live ammunition,” the suit reads.

However, when Schoenauer came through the doorway, he alleges that the stuntwoman “shot him from behind.”

“The bullet entered (Schoenuaer’s) upper back and exited his upper arm/shoulder,” reads the suit.

He is now suing the stuntwoman who reportedly fired the rifle, the firearms instructor, Oak Tree Gun Club and JMP Productions for “general negligence,” according to court documents.

The suit alleges that Schoenauer suffered “wage loss,” as well as “loss of earning capacity” as a result of the incident.

A former mixed martial arts fighter, Schoenauer has over 20 roles as a stuntman credited to him, ranging from 2011’s “Fast Five,” to more recent action films such as 2018’s “Bumblebee,” to the upcoming 2020 thriller sequel, “A Quiet Place 2.”

  1. What kind of legit theatrical operation uses live ammo? Was there no one in charge of safety? This stinks.

  2. Wait. Live ammo? Are you kidding me? A certified firearms instructor was present and LIVE ammo was used for a staged scene? They don’t even use live ammo during the actual shoots (no pun intended). Something’s not right here. The other HALF of the story would be helpful.

  3. Live amo? Wow! Where are the parents ? I mean, the production company really should be to blame.
Not something to even be having real amo even if it’s at the firearm club. Confused, why they are so irresponsible and again, where are the parents?

  4. Les? What’s up with the “where are the parents?” inquires? You do realize that the stuntmen are adults, right?

  5. The other question is about the stuntwoman. Did she even know she was carrying live ammo in her rifle? I feel like there is so much missing in this article (what else is new, KHTS?). For instance, what was the purpose of training at this gun club? Was it teach them how to hold/aim these weapons?

I hope Alex Schoenauer wins a huge amount. Because we don’t know much about the stuntwoman’s role in all of this, so I’m not sure how culpable she is.

I also hope the state shuts this gun club down. They may have learned their lesson by this incident, but I don’t think they should be trusted. I also hope they have insurance to pay Mr. Schoenauer what is due him.

I knew Loren Janes who is still known as the best stuntman ever. After decades of stunt work, he retired never having been injured. Many say he wrote the book on safe stunting. By the way, he was given a star on the Western Walk of Fame (on Main Street)!

    Rest in peace, Loren

  6. That may be your road to happiness, Bill, but Mimi and
the rest of us can do just fine without your advice.

  7. First of all, Bill, I am not a coward. If I were, I wouldn’t have posted a message here, much less the several replies I’ve left to others.

Second, how do you know my political stance? My comments concern a legal opinion concerning where responsibility lies.

Third, I make it a habit not engage in a conversation with misogynists who are, by nature, incapable of reasonable thought.
