Supervisor Barger Spokesperson Tony Bell To Step Down

The longtime spokesperson for the Los Angeles County 5th District is expected to step down.

Tony Bell, who started his service in 2001 under then-Supervisor Michael Antonovich, is moving on from his service with the County.

“It is bittersweet,” Bell said. “This has been the highlight of my professional career.”

Bell is exploring the next options after his over 18-year term with the County but plans on staying active in the community.

“I am looking for new challenges,” Bell said, adding he is now considering moving on to a consulting role or teaching.

Before his service in the County, Bell worked on several political campaigns, later moving onto public relations.

Bell started his time with the County under Antonovich, being interviewed by the chief of staff at the time Kathryn Barger, who is now the supervisor.

“It was an honor to serve my community,” Bell said. “I have really gotten to know some good people.”

In his time as the spokesperson, Bell formed relationships with the community, including members of nonprofits, the media and other levels of government.

Michelle Vega, who serves as the Public Affairs Director for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), is set to take over the roll in Barger’s office.

Vega previously worked in the 5th District Supervisor’s office as a deputy to the Department of Children and Family Services.

As a last call to the community as spokesperson, Bell encouraged residents to reach out to Barger’s office if they have concerns or input for the County.

“This office works really hard to serve our community,” he said. “Reach out to us, this is what public service is about.”

Bell is expected to remain as spokesperson until Jan. 24.
