Survivor Zoe Jacobs Recalls Moments Following Saugus High Shooting

Zoe Jacobs, a Saugus High shooting survivor, joined KHTS Radio Monday to recall what she witnessed during the shooting.

On Thursday, Zoe was in her first-period jazz choir class just like she is every other day of the week.

The 26-year-old choir teacher, Miss Holt, is in her first year of teaching and is always very welcoming to her students when they need a place to “hang out,” Zoe wrote in a statement.

On Thursday, Holt wasn’t only a teacher, but she became a lifesaver to a student who was struck twice by gunfire.

The Saugus High shooting took place about halfway through the class, changing Zoe’s life, as well as the lives of every other Saugus student and staff member.

“There was a group of girls that had run into our classroom and told us that there had been shots outside,” Zoe said during an on-air KHTS interview.

Then about 40 students ran into an office within the classroom and hid, Zoe recalled.

While the students were hunkered down sheltering themselves, Holt was trying to keep everyone calm, saying, we don’t know whether or not this is even real, according to Zoe.

As Holt was talking, the students realized that one of the girls among them had been shot.

Addison Koegle, 14, seemed to have had such an adrenaline rush escaping the gunman that she didn’t even realize she had been shot twice until after reaching the classroom, Zoe said.

Zoe recalled Addison telling her that she had “felt something” when the first shots were fired, but that she didn’t know what it was until she saw she was bleeding.

At that point, Zoe noted her fear shifted from wanting to protect herself to focus on the urgent need to get Addison to a hospital.

“I had never met her before, but I can honestly say that I love her,” Zoe said.

Over the span of the next 20 minutes, Zoe called 9-1-1 multiple times in an effort to get paramedics to the choir room to get Addison the medical attention she needed.

Meanwhile, Zoe said Holt was doing what she could to help Addison while they waited.

About a month prior to the Saugus High shooting, the students and staff members conducted an “active shooter” drill to prepare for such an event, Zoe said.

“We actually did fall back on the training. There were a lot of things we implemented,” Zoe said. “You’re supposed to lock the door and barricade them, hide in as safe a place as you can find, stay low to the ground and keep the lights off.”

As Zoe was reflecting on the events that took place last week, she said she was very thankful for what Holt did to protect her and anyone needing help that day.

“I have so much respect for her,” Zoe said. “I don’t know how she did it. I loved her even before, and I think we are all just amazed with how incredibly she performed.”

As of Tuesday, all the Saugus High shooting survivors who were hospitalized have been released and are at home recovering.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
