Taurid Meteor Shower Expected To Cross Santa Clarita Night Sky

The Northern Taurids meteor shower is expected to be mildly visible in Santa Clarita’s night sky from Monday evening into the early morning hours of Tuesday, according to officials.

The annual astronomical event is not known for its numbers of meteors but rather the intense ‘fireballs’ it can produce, which are simply meteors that burn brighter than anything else in the sky other than the sun and moon, according to the American Meteor Society.

Typically, the Taurids travel more slowly than the average meteor shower, as they can last for up to one second while most are merely sub-second streaks.

Peak viewing hours are usually after midnight, particularly from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m.

In a dark sky with minimal moonlight, stargazers can expect to see up to five meteors an hour.

Unfortunately, conditions are not expected to be ideal for viewing the shower, as the moon is set to be 100 percent full Monday evening, potentially bleaching out the meteors.

The shower derives its name from the Taurus the bull constellation it typically occurs near.
