Today In SCV History: August 10, 1965 — Plaza Theatre Opens In Newhall

On Aug. 10, 1965, the Plaza Theatre opened its doors on Lyons Avenue in Newhall, becoming a beloved gathering place for Santa Clarita Valley moviegoers for more than three decades.

Built by the Continental Theaters chain at 23710 Lyons Ave., the single-screen theater arrived at a time when local entertainment options were limited. The Plaza quickly became known for showing second-run films, double features and Saturday afternoon cartoons, creating lasting memories for generations of SCV residents.

The theater thrived through the 1960s and 1970s, offering an affordable movie-going experience alongside neighboring Newhall Bowl. As the valley grew, however, competition increased with the arrival of multiplex theaters in Valencia. In an effort to adapt, the Plaza underwent renovations and expanded to become the Plaza 3 Cinemas in 1992.

Despite those changes, the rise of larger theater complexes eventually took its toll. The Plaza stopped showing movies in 1999 and was later repurposed as a banquet hall.

Nearly 58 years after its opening, the building entered a new chapter when demolition began in June 2023 to make way for redevelopment, marking the end of one of Newhall’s most recognizable entertainment landmarks.
