On August 17, 1925, the Newhall School District issued a legal notice announcing a special meeting of local voters to decide what to do with the old Newhall School property at Lyons Avenue and Kansas Street.
Published in “The Newhall Signal” on August 20 and 27, 1925, the notice invited local voters to a September 2 meeting to discuss the “disposition of the old school property.”
Ultimately, the two-story wooden schoolhouse, which had served students from about 1913/1914 to 1928, was sold, cut apart, and repurposed into private residences.
One portion, relocated to 24514 Kansas Street, survived nearly a century as a modest home before being bulldozed in late June 2014. The demolition, carried out by new owner Kansas Street Partners LLC, drew criticism from members of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, who said they had not been given the chance to relocate the structure to Heritage Junction.
By county records, the building dated back to 1913–1914, though some local histories claim it first opened as early as 1911.
Either way, it stood as a rare reminder of early Newhall education until its removal. Its loss left only memories, and the site of the current Newhall Elementary on Walnut Street, which opened in 1928, to carry on the history of the district’s first decades.
