Today in Santa Clarita history, former SCV Man of the Year Gary Condie died on his 76th birthday.
Gary Condie, whose legacy of service left a lasting imprint on the Santa Clarita Valley, passed away on January 1, 2020, surrounded by family.
Known for his quiet leadership and tireless commitment to community causes, Condie spent decades shaping nonprofit organizations across the valley while building a respected professional career in accounting.
A certified public accountant, Condie was widely admired for using his financial expertise to strengthen local institutions serving youth, families and vulnerable populations. His work extended well beyond boardrooms, as he became a familiar and trusted presence in nonprofit circles, often described as generous, humble and deeply compassionate.
In recognition of his service, Condie was named the 2005 Santa Clarita Valley Man of the Year and later honored as a 2010 College of the Canyons Silver Spur recipient. His wife, Myrna Condie, was equally involved in charitable efforts and shared the Silver Spur honor before being named SCV Woman of the Year in 2012.
Wayne Crawford, chairman of the SCV Man and Woman of the Year Committee, remembered Condie as someone who dedicated his life to improving the community.
“All who knew him will miss him,” Crawford said. “He supported nearly every local charity in some capacity, especially the Boys & Girls Club. His generosity inspired others to give, and his impact will be felt for years.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley held a special place in Condie’s heart. He began volunteering with the organization in 1976 and went on to serve in nearly every leadership role, including board president and foundation chair. Along with Myrna, he helped establish the Festival of Trees fundraiser, which has generated more than $100,000 annually for the club.

Condie also played a pivotal role in local health care and education initiatives. He co-founded the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation in 1984 and served as its first chairman.
Even as his own health declined, Condie remained committed to the hospital, making significant contributions, including a major donation following an emergency room visit in 2018.

His civic involvement included service as vice president of the Santa Clarita Valley Facilities Foundation, which helped secure land for Golden Valley High School, and board membership with the College of the Canyons Foundation and the Child & Family Center advisory board.
Faith was another cornerstone of Condie’s life. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in numerous leadership roles and helped organize the church’s annual Family Night at Dodger Stadium, blending his devotion to faith with his lifelong love of baseball.
Community leaders remembered Condie as a moral compass and a steady presence in the valley. Former Santa Clarita City Councilman and Mayor Bob Kellar called Condie one of the most exceptional individuals he had known, citing his philanthropy and genuine concern for others.
“He was a real caring soul,” former SCV Boys & Girls Club chief professional officer Jim Ventress wrote, noting Condie’s rare ability to balance professional success with meaningful service.
